KALIMANTAN East with an area of ± 211 440 ± km2 with a population of 2.4 million people is the strongest provincial economic growth compared with other provinces. Abundant natural resources have spurred this area enhance regional development program as an asset in shaping the potential of East Kalimantan province, in order empunyai excellence in various fields. For the management of natural resources (SDA) to be supported by the skills of human resources (HR), thus providing great benefit in the era of globalization is loaded with competition. By starting from the need for qualified human resources that the college needed a large and potentially in East Kalimantan.
Founding of the University Mulawarman (Unmul) is a realization of the struggle of the community leaders and local government Kaltim beginning with the publication of the Decree (SK) Provincial Governor of East Kalimantan No. 15/PPK/KDH/1962, dated June 7, 1962 it stood a college based in Samarinda by name: Higher Education Mulawarman. To support the implementation of educational programs form the foundation of this college to support the needs of funds, facilities, and equipment.
Then on 27 September 1962 set as the date of the founding of the University Mulawarman, based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Science No. 130 1962 September 28, 1962, and officially confirmed on the basis of Presidential Decree No.. 65 dated 23 April 1963.
At its inception, Unmul education programs as much as four faculties namely: constitutional and Ketataniagaan, Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry Faculty, and Faculty of Mining. In the process of implementation of the four faculties are still encountered many obstacles, so at that time only administrative and Ketataniagaan Faculty which can be held, and in 1964 followed by implementation of the learning process of the Faculty of Agriculture. Then in 1966 the Faculty of constitutional and Ketataniagaan split into the Faculty of Social and Political and Economic Faculty. Because of the difficulty of teaching staff in the Faculty of Mining in the United Kingdom so that in 1970 forced to close. In 1978 IKIP Samarinda integrate into the University Mulawarman so stand up and Pedagogy Faculty of Education with the publication of Decree No. Directorate General of Higher Education. 181/D/E/1978 dated March 20, 1978 about the opening of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. Thus in 1978 the University Mulawarman consists of 5 faculties in accordance with Presidential Decree No.. 66 of 1982 dated 7 September 1982 namely:
